Ukraine will not support independence of South Ossetia, Abkhazia - President

In his today’s interview to Reuters President Victor Yushchenko stressed that Ukraine does not support the decision of Russia to recognize independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

“We are sorry about adoption of such a decision. For Ukraine it is unacceptable therefore we cannot support the position”, - he said.

President Yushchenko repeated that Ukraine’s position towards the subject remains intact: any country’s territorial integrity is it’s fundamental right.

Violation of this principle according to Victor Yushchenko leads to exacerbation of the situation not only on Caucasus but, potentially, in many other parts of the world.

“Particularly it leads to mutual distrust … when diplomacy and peaceful settlement policy is substituted with policy of brute force”, - he said.
