President’s statement in response to recognition of independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia by Russia
On August 26 the President of Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev signed the decrees recognizing independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, despite numerous appeals from international community to refrain from that. The tragedy of Georgian people and people of South Ossetia, the military conflict between Russia and Georgia became a hard challenge not only for Caucasian region, but for Europe and the whole civilized humanity too. The decision of Russian authorities bears threat to peace and stability in both our region and European area, undermines consistency of UN Charter principles and of other international legal acts, is an illegitimate modification of state boarders and an expression of pressure and coercive interference. Ukraine condemns Russia’s recognition of the self-proclaimed formations’ independence and calls on Russian leadership to return to internationally accepted norms and principles of conflict settlement and to observe reached international agreements.
Ukraine also counts on international community to unite efforts to restore territorial integrity of Georgia and declares its readiness to actively participate in the process. |
