President meets Minister for European Affairs of France

President Victor Yushchenko met Minister for European Affairs of France Mr Pierre Lellouche, who is on an official visit to Ukraine.

At the meeting sides have discussed bilateral cooperation between Ukraine and France, European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations of Ukraine, etc.

The President expressed hope for further active development of Ukrainian-French political relations and deepening bilateral cooperation. "We see your position as that of partner and friend", he said. He added that relations between Ukraine and France have a strong economic foundation, because France is one of the biggest investors in Ukraine.

Discussing European integration parties raised the issue of preparation for the December EU-Ukraine Summit. The President stressed that the priority for the Ukrainian side is signature of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU. He said that Ukraine considers very important including provisions on the prospects of EU membership for Ukraine in the text of the Agreement. Victor Yushchenko expressed assurance that the position should also be included in the December Summit finalizing document. "We want to have a positive and realistic document", said Victor Yushchenko.

President Yushchenko and Minister Lellouche also discussed some aspects of Ukraine's cooperation with NATO and the activities undertaken within the framework of Ukraine's course towards Euro-Atlantic integration in order to achieve the necessary criteria for NATO membership.

Separately, the parties discussed the election campaign in Ukraine. Victor Yushchenko assured that that elections would be held democratically and in strict accordance with the legislation.
