President holds meeting with law enforcement agencies leadership

President Victor Yushchenko held a meeting with law enforcement agencies’ leadership dedicated to ensuring legitimacy of the second round of presidential election scheduled on February 7.

The President stressed that the election should be held in strict accordance with the law and in the conditions of proper order. He called on the participants of the meeting to treat this assignment responsibly.

The President noted with regret that the closer the voting day is, the tenser political situation becomes. "The situation becomes less tolerant every day. Unfortunately, it becomes more and more estranged from the European democratic culture and very often, from human standards of ethics ", said Victor Yushchenko.

The President instructed the Interior Ministry and State Guards troops to strengthen the protection of Central Election Commission, including the external perimeter of the building. The President also instructed the Security Service of Ukraine and State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection to strengthen the protection of state information resources.

The President announced that he plans to sign a decree today, implementing the decision of the NSDC on ensuring legitimacy of the elections.

Victor Yushchenko also repeated his position on the amendments to the electoral legislation recently adopted by the Parliament, which he has signed. "In the final stage of the election we have a normal democratic instrument, which minimizes the abuse by both candidates in case of alleged failure", said Victor Yushchenko.
