Head of State: We have to strengthen the role of European diplomats in the release of Ukrainian hostages

President Petro Poroshenko is convinced that to achieve progress on the release of Ukrainian patriots captured by militants and illegally detained in Russia, it is necessary to strengthen the participation of European diplomacy in this process.

"I think it is necessary to make the role of European diplomacy in the release of hostages in the Donbas more significant," the President said, adding that the issue of hostages was also discussed today during the meeting with Vice-President of the European Commission, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.

"We see that after the apparent success observed in December, when we managed to release 74 Ukrainian hostages, we again have not had progress for more than 2.5 months, despite the absolutely concrete proposals provided to the Russian side," Petro Poroshenko noted.

"This concerns both hostages illegally detained in the occupied territory and political prisoners, political hostages held in prisons of the Russian Federation, including Sushchenko, Sentsov, Crimean Tatars and many others," he added.
