Maryna Poroshenko in the Forum “Learning to Live Together”: Inclusive education will allow children with special educational needs to be equal in Ukrainian society

President’s wife Maryna Poroshenko made a working trip to Kharkiv region. Mrs. Poroshenko opened the first national forum “Learning to Live Together” dedicated to a multidisciplinary approach to working with children with special educational needs.

The event was attended by correctional teachers, principals of schools, pre-school institutions, development centers, social workers, parents of children with special educational needs, volunteers of social initiatives, public representatives, UNICEF Representative in Ukraine Giovanna Barberis, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany Wolfgang Mössinger, Professor at Hamburg University, Specialist in Breakdown of Learning and Correctional Teaching Processes Joachim Schroeder, Commissioner of the President of Ukraine for Children's Rights Mykola Kuleba and Acting Minister of Health Ulana Suprun.

Currently, international experts and Ukrainian educators point out that Ukraine has made a huge step forward over the recent years in the issue of developing inclusive education.

Addressing the attendees, Maryna Poroshenko emphasized: “The best indicator of the success of the reform of inclusive education is that from September 1, the number of pupils with special educational needs in secondary schools increased by more than 25%. And it is very important that, on this difficult path of change and transformation in the education system, we feel an active support of the President of Ukraine, the Cabinet of Ministers and the Ukrainian Parliament”.

Also, the wife of the Head of State noted that more than 50 thousand children with special educational needs were beyond the limits of qualitative education and socialization. “We understand that inclusive education will allow children with special educational needs to feel equal in Ukrainian society. It is the right of such children to live independently. It is an opportunity for their future employment. It is their chance to have friends. And I believe that in the near future Ukrainian society will be open to everyone,” Maryna Poroshenko emphasized.
