Our ambition is to make eastern borders of Ukraine eastern borders of the EU. This was the answer of Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Kostiantyn Yelisieiev to the question of journalists in Strasbourg about the plans and steps of the Ukrainian leadership in the issue of European integration. He assured that reforms will be continued: “The President has set new tasks for the Ukrainian diplomacy, the Foreign Ministry and the Government, as the tasks of European integration correspond with the presidential program. We will move forward and will not stop”.
Kostiantyn Yelisieiev called today’s signing of the legislative act of the EU on visa waiver for Ukraine historical. Then it will be published in the official journal of the EU and in 20 days, it will enter into force. “On the night of June 10-11 we expect the visa-free regime to enter into force de jure and de facto. And our citizens with biometric foreign passports will be able to travel,” he said. According to Kostiantyn Yelisieiev, another dimension of freedom will be opened then. Due to the Association Agreement, Ukraine gained free circulation of goods, capitals and services, and due to the visa-free regime, free movement of people will be partially initiated. “We are just at the beginning, as our goal is to ensure the right of our citizens not only to travel, but also to study, work on probation and do business. This will be another additional boost for the future reforms,” the Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration emphasized.
Kostiantyn Yelisieiev noted that the Ukrainian government will not stop and many tasks of European integration are still ahead. “The goal of integration into the EU is not cancelled. But through practical sectoral integration, not abstract one,” he said.
According to him, Ukraine integrates into the EU internal market due to the Association Agreement; integrates into the area of freedom, security and justice of the EU due to the visa-free documents; moves to membership in the EU Energy Union due to the energy reforms. The goal is to integrate gradually into the EU’s digital economy sector and the European Common Aviation Area. “Thus, we will create a basis for the full integration. Then, the only political decision will remain – membership in the EU. This is the European integration philosophy of the President,” Kostiantyn Yelisieiev noted.
According to the Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration, preparations to the Ukraine-EU Summit are currently in process. He is hopeful that its date will be announced shortly. Kostiantyn Yelisieiev also says that the President will coordinate future actions with the EU leadership today in Strasbourg.
“We had a truly European May – visa-free regime, the Eurovision. We expect the decision by the Dutch Senate as regards ratification of the Association Agreement. As for today, the voting is planned for May 30. We are really hopeful that the decision will be positive,” the Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration told.
