President: Ukraine urges the EU states to reject the construction of the Nord Stream 2

During the negotiations with Vice-President of the European Commission, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, President Petro Poroshenko urged the European Commission, the EU member-states to reject the construction of the Nord Stream 2. It was stated by the President during the press briefing following the meeting.

"We could not ignore the need to strengthen cooperation in the issues of energy security of Ukraine and the EU, especially given the latest cynical actions of Russia's Gazprom," Petro Poroshenko noted.

"We have to make extremely important conclusions about this gas crisis. Russia is an unreliable supplier and only joint actions of Ukraine and the EU can provide energy security for both Ukraine and the European Union," he said. According to him, during the coming Summit it is planned to discuss the sectoral directions of cooperation and the possibility of Ukraine joining the digital and energy unions, as well as other forms of cooperation.

"Given the current situation, we must make important conclusions. First, Gazprom has finally lost the image of a reliable partner in the energy sector for the European Union and for Ukraine. Second, Gazprom, and more precisely the Kremlin, clearly stated its intention to use the future issue of gas supply to Europe as a means of geopolitical struggle, neglecting both contractual obligations and justice," the Head of State emphasized.

“Ukraine has once again urged the European Commission, the EU member-states to reject the construction of the Nord Stream 2, as it is a project that endangers the energy security of Ukraine and the EU,” Petro Poroshenko stated.

Vice-President of the European Commission, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini informed that the parties had discussed the recent decision of Gazprom to suspend the supply of gas that had already been prepaid. “Gazprom must respect its contractual obligations. The European Commission has already joined the negotiations through Vice-President Šefčovič. We are willing to facilitate trilateral talks to find a positive decision," Federica Mogherini said.
