President met with Afghan warriors: Your military fraternity is a bright example for the present generation of the defenders of Ukraine

President Petro Poroshenko took part in the solemn meeting on the Day of Commemoration of Combatants in the Territory of Other States and the 29th anniversary of the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan held in the Central House of Officers.

The President recalled the history of the recent 50 years when war and military conflicts of various intensity were instigated in different areas of the planet. “They were held far away from Ukraine, which didn’t have its statehood at that time. And our compatriots took part in the majority of them. For the sake of the imperial ambitions of the formers USSR our compatriots were losing their lives and health. Recognition of this fact in the late 80s became one of the powerful catalysts of the movement for the restoration of our Ukrainian independence. The Afghan soldiers took an active part in these processes,” Petro Poroshenko said.

The President reminded that 29 years ago the Soviet campaign in Afghanistan ended, however this ancient Islamic country still feels the consequences of this interference. Then, it was Russian aggression against Moldova, events in Baku, aggression against Georgia, now - aggression against Ukraine, events in Syria. The Head of State noted that “they are the aggressive essence of Moscow”.

“For us, Ukrainians, the most dreadful aftermath of the Afghan war was hundreds of our fellow countrymen killed. The broken fate of young people, the bitter memories of the battles and losses,” Petro Poroshenko said.

“160 thousand Ukrainians went through that hell. And they were hardened in it. Thus, the military fraternity was born. Almost every fourth casualty was Ukrainian - over 3300 people. The memory of those events, of the irreversible losses will always remain in the hearts of Ukrainians,” the President noted.

“Yes, it was not our war, but it broke our fates. You did what you had to. Your courage and military fraternity are a vivid example for the present generation of the defenders of Ukraine,” the Head of State stressed.

The President assured that he would always support the initiatives of the civic movement of the veterans aimed to preserve military traditions and consolidate our society.

On the occasion of the event, the President awarded the Afghan warriors.
