On September 26, during the visit of President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko to the United States, President’s wife Maryna Poroshenko held a meeting with the leadership of the New York City Department of Education.
During the conversation, the parties discussed programs for preventing and overcoming bullying in the school environment. According to Maryna Poroshenko, in recent years the solution of this issue has become of special urgency for Ukraine. According to the UNICEF research, 24% of Ukrainian schoolchildren rank themselves among the victims of bullying. "Since bullying in the educational environment negatively affects the development of the child's personality and the formation of the system of values, it is very important to timely and effectively counteract violent and cruel behavior of schoolchildren," Maryna Poroshenko said.
Also, the wife of the President of Ukraine presented the results of the national project of the Poroshenko Foundation "Inclusive Education - The Level of Consciousness of the Nation", which is currently being implemented in 21 regions.
During the meeting, Maryna Poroshenko thanked the American side for cooperation which was launched in 2016 and contributed to significant changes in the process of developing inclusive education in Ukraine.
"Over this time, the number of students with special educational needs in our country, which moved from social isolation to education in ordinary schools, increased by 66%. Also, the network of inclusive resource centers is being actively developed in the country. These centers started functioning on September 1 under new, more progressive and qualitative approaches," the First Lady emphasized.
In addition, the parties discussed the training of students of pedagogical professions for effective work with children having special educational needs. In particular, how to form a system of knowledge and skills in organizing and implementing inclusive education of children with special educational needs.
The parties agreed to continue fruitful cooperation in modernizing education in Ukraine and creating a tolerant, humane and safe atmosphere in the new Ukrainian school.
