President Petro Poroshenko is confident that the deployment of the UN peacekeeping mission in the occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions can become a guarantor of peace in Ukraine.
“I am confident that this mission can become a solid guarantor of ceasefire regime, disarmament of the illegal armed groups, stimulate the withdrawal of Russian troops from the occupied territory and ensure a reliable closure of the uncontrolled area of the border between Ukraine and Russia in order to prevent new infiltration of Russian troops, Russian weaponry, so that we can finally start the stage of political settlement after the implementation of the security package,” the Head of State noted in the press conference following the negotiations with Federal Chancellor of Austria Sebastian Kurz.
The President thanked Austria for its solid support for a peacekeeping mission under the mandate of the UN Security Council in the east of our country. "It is difficult to overestimate the assistance of the country with high trust, with neutral status, which is Austria, and I am very grateful for such a firm and consistent position," he said.
Petro Poroshenko thanked Sebastian Kurz for his personal support to our state’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence, support and assistance in reforms and ensuring the movement of Ukraine into the European Union. “And it wasn’t just words. I think that Ukraine was one of the most visited destination of Mr. Sebastian. He also visited the collision line. He is very well aware of the situation in the Donbas, along the collision line,” he said.
The Head of State noted the role of Mr. Kurz as the OSCE Head. “During Austria’s presidency in the OSCE, we have significantly reinforced the OSCE SMM due to the efforts of Mr. Chancellor. We have improved the technical equipment and objective information provided by the OSCE SMM to the world from the collision line, from the territory occupied by Russia,” Petro Poroshenko stressed.
“I would like to thank you Mr. Chancellor for such a responsible and professional position. We appreciate that,” the Head of State emphasized.
In turn, the Chancellor of Austria stressed the importance of enhancing the active efforts to establish peace in the east of Ukraine. "I would really like the situation in eastern Ukraine to improve and peace to be established on a permanent basis, so that we can finally talk about the positive development of the situation in Ukraine," he said.
