President examined the course of preparation of a spent nuclear fuel storage facility at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant

In the framework of the working trip to the Chernobyl NPP, President Petro Poroshenko examined the course of preparation of a spent nuclear fuel storage facility before carrying out “hot” tests and processing the spent nuclear fuel from reactors №1, 2, 3 of the Chernobyl NPP for the further storage.

According to the work plan, so-called "hot" tests should be completed in December this year, after which the object will be put into operation. The beginning of the facility's full operation should begin in the fourth quarter of 2019.

In general, 21297 spent fuel assemblies are currently stored in the old repository. All of them will be moved to a new repository - SNFS-2. According to the capacities of the new facility, it is planned to transfer 2,500 fuel assemblies to a new storage facility per year. Thus, in 9.5 years, it is planned to complete the transfer of the spent nuclear fuel to SNFSF-2, where it will be stored for another 100 years.
