Opening the 11th Kyiv Security Forum, President Petro Poroshenko called the preservation of the logic of the Minsk process and the assistance in the provision of defensive lethal weapons one of the main paths to Ukraine’s victory in the war with the Russian aggressor.
The Head of State thanked the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Lithuania and other countries for leadership in the issue of providing weapons. "We have not even got the weapons yet and Russian tankers already refuse to take their tanks to the frontline, having heard that this weaponry can be delivered to us," the President said, adding that this also saves lives of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians.
He stressed that the assistance from international partners was a powerful deterrent to Russia, and expressed confidence that it should be expanded.
"Although Russia is a party to these (Minsk - ed.) Agreements, it constantly resists this process. And the explanation is very simple: when I was negotiating the Minsk plan, I meant a plan for peace. Instead, the Russian side does not want peace and never believed in it. It did not believe that Minsk could work," the Head of State noted.
The President stressed: "It is very important for everyone to understand that the road to the implementation of the Minsk agreements runs through the deployment of a genuine full-fledged UN peacekeeping operation, in accordance with the decision of the UN Security Council, deployment in the occupied Donbas". According to him, this peacekeeping mission should cover the entire occupied territory, including the temporarily uncontrolled section of the Ukrainian-Russian border.
"I have no doubt that as soon as we establish control over the border, peace will immediately return to this land in a matter of weeks. And that is what Russia is afraid of," the President said.
