President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and French President Emmanuel Macron coordinated actions on the ways to achieve peace in Ukraine. "The first question I raised in the talks with Europe's leaders is the establishment of peace," Petro Poroshenko said during a live broadcast on Inter TV channel following the talks with the French President.
“We received an absolutely clear message that immediately after my re-election, we are convinced that a window of opportunity will open and a meeting will be convened at the highest level of the Normandy format," he added.
The President said: "It is most likely that this will happen in France, just on the fifth anniversary of the Normandy format".
According to him, the summit will have an absolutely clear agenda. "The first thing we managed to agree on - on April 18, via the Skype-conference of the Trilateral Contact Group a ceasefire regime will be declared on occasion of Easter. Signals will be delivered to the Russian side to create conditions for the immediate serious negotiations in the Normandy format on the peace process after the presidential elections".
The President emphasizes that the peace process envisages that the security component should be implemented the first. "The security component is the withdrawal of foreign troops, the withdrawal of heavy machinery and artillery. The wish of Ukraine, which I firmly believe will be heard by our partners, is the control, including through the peacekeeping mission, over the uncontrolled section of the Ukrainian-Russian border," Petro Poroshenko said.
The Head of State also stressed that after fulfilling all conditions and ensuring all requirements of the security component, the political process could begin.
"And I want to thank both German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President of France Emmanuel Macron for their political will, for a resolute initiative that can be implemented immediately after my re-election," Petro Poroshenko emphasized.
Answering the question that without the participation of Russia, the Normandy format is not effective, the Head of State reminded: "Russia took a break. Russia hoped that Petro Poroshenko would not get into the second round. Now it hopes that Poroshenko will not be elected. And there will be another weak candidate, with which it will be very easy for Russia to reach an agreement face to face without participation of western partners and promote Russian conditions. De facto achieve the capitulation of Ukraine".
"I firmly believe that, first of all, Ukrainians will not allow this," Petro Poroshenko emphasized.
"Today it was demonstrated that Ukraine and me, as President, enjoy a strong support from the leaders of the European Union. I emphasize that when Putin realizes that President Poroshenko has got the support of the majority of Ukrainians, as President Macron said, a window of opportunity will be opened," the Head of State said.
"We all emphasize that there is currently no alternative to the Normandy format. Because the Normandy format represents all EU member states, with clear coordination with the United States, and clearly coordinated actions will lead to the establishment of peace in Donbas, or the increase or prolongation of sanctions against the Russian Federation in May or June. And Russia pays a very high price in this totally meaningless war, totally meaningless aggression," Petro Poroshenko noted.
The President is confident that it will be possible to achieve peace in Donbas and this can be done already in the near future.
