President Petro Poroshenko emphasizes that the creation of the Autocephalous Orthodox Ukrainian Church will not prevent freedom of religion in Ukraine.
"I want to emphasize separately that the Autocephalous Orthodox Church will not become a state church. And the separation of the church from the state will remain. All believers have and will have the right to freely choose a specific temple, as well as their church jurisdiction," the Head of State said during a meeting with the leaders of the parliamentary factions aimed to support the Appeal to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I on granting the Tomos of Autocephaly.
“Those who want to stay in a church where they preserve prayerful unity with the Russian Orthodox church retain the guaranteed right of choice. In this regard, religious or any other coercion or prohibition are categorically inadmissible,” the President noted.
“I would like to underline that it is my firm position,” Petro Poroshenko emphasized.
