Ukraine is interested in developing trade relations with Georgia and the trade turnover between the two countries, which now equals 526 million dollars, can be raised up to 1 billion. It was stated by the President in the joint Ukraine-Georgia business forum.
The Head of State emphasized that the people of Georgia is extremely close to Ukrainians. “I am glad that we see a lot of Georgian entrepreneurs and tourists on the streets of Kyiv. Today, we have a lot of Ukrainian entrepreneurs and tourists on the streets of Tbilisi. It means that the strategic partnership between Ukraine and Georgia finds its practical implementation,” Petro Poroshenko emphasized.
He added that the Georgian governmental delegation headed by the Prime Minister of Georgia would visit Ukraine in autumn.
“526 million dollars in 2016. We think it does not reflect the potential Ukraine and Georgia have. We have set a goal to raise our trade turnover up to 1 billion dollars in a few years,” Petro Poroshenko said. According to him, the first quarter of 2017 has already demonstrated growth by 16.5%. “The figures are encouraging,” he said.
The President emphasized: “Ukraine is a reliable trade partner for Georgia. Traditionally, Ukrainian agricultural goods find their consumers all over the world and Georgia is a very important marker for us”. According to him, 21% of agricultural import of Georgia come from Ukraine.
President Poroshenko urged to create new forms of ties on the basis of the international specialization and cooperation of production, including on the basis of joint production.
“This is also an evidence of expediency of increasing the mutual volume of direct investments between Ukraine and Georgia,” the Head of State noted adding that the government of the countries and the business representatives work over this issue. Over 50 companies with Ukrainian capital operate in Georgia and the volume of Ukrainian investments in Georgia equals 42 million dollars, as of the end of the first quarter. The volume of Georgian investments in Ukraine is much smaller - 4.6 million dollars.
“I want to invite you to Ukraine. I am here to convince you that the reforms of the Ukrainian government, President, Government, Parliament are irreversible,” the President noted. He told about the changes in Ukraine, particularly the implementation of the decentralization and deregulation program, reform of public procurement. The President also expects the completion of the selection of new judges of the Supreme Court by the end of the week.
In his turn, the Prime Minister of Georgia confirmed willingness of Georgia to enhance relations. “Despite the fact that Ukraine and Georgia face lots of challenges caused by Russian occupation, our priority is ti continue reforms,” he said.
He emphasized that Ukraine is an important trade partner for Georgia that enters the top-5 states in terms of trade turnover for Georgia. Giorgi Kvirikashvili urged the attendees to take advantage of today's visit, which demonstrated strategic partnership, and invited the Ukrainian entrepreneurs to invest in Georgia as well.
