Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a law passed by the Verkhovna Rada that recognizes servicemembers honored with the President of Ukraine’s award, the Cross of Military Merit, as those who have rendered outstanding service to their homeland.
The law establishes corresponding state guarantees for recipients of the Cross of Military Merit. In particular, they will receive a monthly monetary allowance equal to one and a half times the minimum wage and will be entitled to social protections.
The law also addresses the respectful treatment of fallen warriors who were recognized with this award. It provides for free burials with military honors and the possibility of distinguished interment at the National Military Memorial Cemetery.
The Cross of Military Merit was established by Presidential Decree on May 5, 2022, to recognize members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations for outstanding personal bravery and courage, heroic acts during combat missions, or exceptional achievements in the command of troops (forces).
The bill was initiated by the Head of State to ensure that warriors recognized with this award receive tangible guarantees. Among all military awards, the Cross of Military Merit is the highest.
As of today, 331 defenders of Ukraine have been awarded the Cross of Military Merit, one of whom has received it twice.
