President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone call with UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
António Guterres expressed condolences and solidarity with all Ukrainian families who lost their loved ones as a result of last night’s Russian strike on Ukraine. The Head of State thanked him for these important words and noted that it was one of the largest Russian attacks. Volodymyr Zelenskyy informed that all necessary services are still on the ground, dealing with the aftermath of the strike.
The President and the Secretary-General discussed the steps needed to stop the killing of people. The Head of State stressed that Ukraine is ready for a meeting at the level of leaders, as only in such a format can all the most critical issues be addressed. However, Russia continues to present new conditions and to pursue its aggression instead.
António Guterres noted that a ceasefire should be the first step toward real peace. Volodymyr Zelenskyy supported this position.
He also thanked the Secretary-General for his clear support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. The Head of State emphasized that the world must restore the strength of international law and respect for the principles of the UN Charter.
In addition, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and António Guterres discussed preparations for the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, on the sidelines of which Ukraine will organize important events. Ukraine looks forward to the Secretary-General’s participation in these events.
