President Meets with IAEA Director General

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, who is visiting Ukraine for the twelfth time already since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

The Head of State thanked the IAEA for the work of its missions at Ukrainian nuclear power plants.

The main focus of the meeting was the situation at the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which requires not just monitoring but concrete action.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that it is essential for the IAEA to be present at the Zaporizhzhia NPP in full compliance with international law.

The President also stressed that any potential attempt by Russia to restart the reactors at the plant is unacceptable.

For his part, the IAEA Director General noted that, at present, not even the minimum safety conditions exist for such a restart.

The meeting also covered the safety of all nuclear facilities in Ukraine, including the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, whose protective structure was damaged by a Russian attack drone strike.

In addition, the parties discussed specific cooperation projects between Ukraine and the IAEA aimed at developing nuclear energy in our state. These projects may be presented at the Ukraine Recovery Conference, which will take place on July 10–11 in Rome.
