The investigation must be transparent and criminals must be punished - Presiden on Handziuk’s case

President Petro Poroshenko called on the political forces not to speculate on the death of activist Kateryna Handziuk and stressed that the authorities are determined to bring the perpetrators and killers of the activist to justice.

"I cannot bypass the event that shocked the entire society, the whole Ukraine - the murder of activist, volunteer Kateryna Handziuk. Yes, I firmly believe that she did not die, she was killed. The tragedy was a consequence of a criminal attack. There is no other opinion here,” Petro Poroshenko stressed.

The Head of State said: "Despite the emotionality of numerous statements, despite the fact that this crime is largely solved: the murderer was found; the assistants who have confessed; the organizer was arrested. I do not think that it is fully solved and I am confident that we must continue our work in this direction".

At the same time, the President stressed that the requirements of civil society regarding transparency, openness, impartiality and efficiency of the investigation are completely justified. "By this we must demonstrate loyalty to European values and we have been fighting for this. And for the sake of greater trust, of course, the authorities should be more open," he said.

"Therefore, today in the Parliament, there should be speech and information of law enforcers not for the Parliament, but for the whole society," the Head of State said, adding that it is necessary "to demonstrate that the authorities are determined to bring the perpetrators and murderers to justice, no matter who they are".

"But I want everyone to understand that political speculation on this topic will not clear up this case, but on the contrary make it even more complicated. Thus, I call on the pro-government and opposition forces not to throw unfounded arguments. And, God forbid, not to make PR on blood," the President emphasized.

The President called for unity and urged to ensure that the investigation is effective, fair, transparent, speedy and credible in society. "There is no other option," he said.

Petro Poroshenko also said: "I emphasize that the attacks on activists are by no means part of state policy. On the contrary, the history of recent years shows very effective cooperation between Ukrainian authorities and civil society. And this effective cooperation was demonstrated during the enormous volunteer movement, which helped create the Ukrainian army, helped fight corruption in the Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defense using volunteer troops. Active participation of volunteers and public activists in reforms, their inclusion in the drafting of laws. And practice shows that this is a proper, effective, European form of cooperation”.

According to him, in this case, we should also find exactly the same mechanism of unification of efforts, which will allow to imprison the criminals and have the trust of society.

"No one will be allowed, using this case, to destabilize the situation in the state," the President noted.

"I want to emphasize that it is unlikely that anyone is interested in solving this crime, conducting the investigation and bringing the killers, organizers and hirers to justice more than the President. After the case has been requalified as murder, they may be subject to an absolutely fair and objective highest form of punishment," Petro Poroshenko said.

The President also stressed that no version, and there are more than twenty today, would be rejected, each one would be very carefully investigated in accordance with the procedure. "And I, as President, have no opportunity and should not receive information that could affect the investigation. But the authorities have to ensure transparency and the law enforcement agencies have to work effectively. This is how we can establish the truth and punish the evil," he said.
