During the working visit to Rivne region, President Petro Poroshenko stressed that the efforts of the Ukrainian people and the heroism of the army enjoy respect and understanding of the world and allow Ukrainian diplomacy to strengthen the international coalition in support of Ukraine. We are talking about a wide range of support, including sanctions, assistance in the training of specialists, delivery of weapons, in particular Javelin anti-tank missile systems.
"In the year 2020, the Armed Forces will be organized and able to operate in full compliance with NATO standards under the law on the national security," the Head of State noted during the meeting with residents of Zdolbuniv and Zdolbuniv district in Rivne region.
The President is convinced that Ukraine's path to the European Union and NATO will help ensure the security of Ukrainian borders and sovereignty. "Our way goes to peace, but not on the conditions of capitulation offered to us by the Russian fifth column, but on the basis of the national interests of Ukraine," the Head of State emphasized.
The President noted that membership in the EU is a path to prosperity. "To make sure of that compare the level of life of the EU member states and people of these countries with that of the countries and people of the former Soviet Union. I am convinced that we have no alternatives," he said. According to him, Euro-Atlantic integration is also a way to strengthen Ukrainian statehood and dignity of Ukrainian citizens. "And we have proved that we are capable of winning on this determined path of the Ukrainian people," the Head of State emphasized.
The President stressed that Ukrainians had stopped Russian aggression and preserved the independence of the state. "For the first time. Because always, when Russia attacked Ukraine, and this has been the case for the past 300 years, Ukraine couldn’t stand more than 1.5-2 years. This is the first time when we have demonstrated that we are able to protect our sovereignty," the Head of State emphasized.
According to him, until 2014, the army was on the periphery of state attention for too long, Yanukovych's regime completely destroyed it, the process of its sale, looting and tearing apart began. "But in 2014, we had an opportunity to see that many times, the enemy did not take into account Ukrainian patriotism and unity of people. It did not take into account volunteers who were ready to defend the state with their bare hands. We have revived the Ukrainian army in an unprecedentedly short period of time," Petro Poroshenko said.
"American generals and generals from other NATO member states said that 4-5 years were needed to create one brigade and within 4 years the AFU was created. And today, there are hundreds of thousands of well-prepared, well-armed and well-equipped soldiers with material, medical, food, combat, housing and other support, who are finally being raised on Ukrainian traditions," the President said. He reminded that chaplains emerged in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which not only bear the word of God. "I have been on the front line many times and I can tell you that there are no atheists there," the Head of State noted.
The Head of State stressed that the traditions on which Ukrainian warriors are being raised were inherited from the Cossacks, from the heroes of the Ukrainian Revolution and national liberation movements, from the heroes of the UPA, who were finally recognized by the state as full-fledged members of the liberation struggle. "I am proud of the fact that I have recently signed the law assigning the status of combatant to the veterans of the UPA. Why is this so important now? Because a new generation of Ukrainians is learning not only from ATO soldiers and members of the JFO. We also learn courage from them, that is why the ancient yet new combat greetings "Glory to Ukraine!" Glory to the Heroes!" sounds so natural by the young generation,” the President noted, reminding that the anthem of the OUN became the martial music of the AFU. According to him, the Ukrainian army is able to adequately resist the enemy and increases its strength - budget allocates an amount that exceeds 5% of GDP for the needs of defense and security. "We invest part of the resources in the capacities of the defense industrial complex, we restore the work of design bureaus, create new jobs in the defense industry. Each month, the Ukrainian army receives tens and hundreds of units of new and upgraded weapons, equipment, including aircrafts and missiles," the Head of State emphasized.
