President: Constitutional reform is the most important for Ukraine

At the unifying convention of BPP “Solidarity” and “UDAR” parties, President Petro Poroshenko touched upon the necessity of introduction of constitutional amendments on decentralization and urged the Parliament to adopt these amendments.

The President called the date of August 31 very important. On that day, the Parliament will vote for the draft amendments to the constitution on decentralization. The Head of State emphasized that the constitutional reform is the most important for Ukraine, for the further development of Ukraine is impossible without it. And resistance to these changes is beneficial solely for the enemy. “Ukraine is weak without reforms. Ukraine has no chance without reforms. Without reforms, we only preserve the weakness of Ukraine and do not modernize the authorities,” Petro Poroshenko said.

The Head of State emphasized that “decentralization brings the government closer to people, increases the responsibility of both authorities and people and provides the bigger part of powers to the territorial communities”. “For 24 years there have been only discussions about that and no actions. Government officials tried to keep powers for themselves and obstructed the transfer of powers to people,” Petro Poroshenko said.

The President emphasized that 78% of Ukrainians support the decentralization reform. “We are obliged to implement this reform via the Parliament,” he said.

The President noted that the forces interested in weakening the country are trying to artificially impose a discussion on certain items of "Transitional Provisions" and the status of certain territories. The President emphasized that 99% of Ukrainians support the integrity of Ukraine. “There will be no federalization and no statuses. We will vote for this on Monday in the Parliament. We will reveal these lies and defend the unitary status of Ukraine. We are responsible for protecting our people from lies. We will conduct the constitutional reform, take an active stand, come to people and explain them. We must defend Ukraine. If we do not defend it, there will be no one else to defend it legally. And the feat of our warriors in the east will be vain,” the President noted.

The Head of State noted that the reform of decentralization is not the only problem, for it will be followed by the reform of judiciary, which has to become a powerful strike against corruption in the judicial system.

“We will keep implementing reforms despite all criticism. It was a right thing to elect the Parliament and form the coalition. We will guarantee that the political forces will fulfill the obligations undertaken,” the President said.

The President added that Europe considers the interests of Ukraine as the top priority despite a series of its own problems and supports Ukraine in holding the constitutional reform.
