Presidents of Ukraine and Greece Discussed the Implementation of Agreements on Ukraine’s Energy Security

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy began his working visit to Greece with a meeting with President of the country Constantine Tassoulas to discuss energy support for Ukraine and the implementation of joint projects.

The Head of State thanked Greece and the entire Greek people for their unwavering support for Ukraine throughout the full period of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

“And we are grateful to Greece for fully supporting us from the very first day – when we were fighting for candidate status in the European Union and continue to fight for the opening of clusters on this path toward future European Union membership. Greece has always stood on Ukraine’s side, always supported us,” the President said.

Constantine Tassoulas expressed support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and reaffirmed the steadfastness of this position.

“Our position stems from the fact that our country unwaveringly supports and respects the UN Charter and international law, which were violated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine,” the President of Greece emphasized.

During the expanded-format meeting, the parties discussed energy cooperation in detail – specifically the agreement between Ukraine and Greece on gas, which will help our country get through the winter.

“Today, Ukraine and the Ukrainian people face a major challenge – this winter, a winter under Russian drones, missiles, under daily strikes. And here, political support alone is not enough. There is also tangible support. And I am very glad that over these past months we have been working on bilateral agreements on energy support for Ukraine,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted.

Greece is also ready to develop partnership in mutually beneficial projects and in the security sphere. The discussion included the use of drones not only for military but also for civilian purposes.

In addition, the parties discussed diplomatic efforts, the need to ramp up sanctions against Russia to force it to come to the negotiating table, and the use of frozen Russian assets. Ukraine expects the European Union to adopt a decision this year to direct these funds to Ukraine’s defense.

Special attention was given to the involvement of Greek businesses in Ukraine’s reconstruction and to joint efforts to return Ukrainian children abducted by Russia.
