President prayed for peace in Ukraine on Palm Sunday in Mariupol

President Petro Poroshenko began a working visit to Donetsk region and attended the Archangel Michael’s Cathedral in Mariupol. The President of Ukraine took part in the divine service and consecrated pussy willow branches. The Head of State prayed for peace in Ukraine and talked with the believers.

The President noted that from the first day of his presidency he did, does and will do everything to bring peace to the Ukrainian land. "Of course, unfortunately, it does not depend on us," he added.

Petro Poroshenko said he was accompanied by Minister of Defense of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak and Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Viktor Muzhenko. He recalled that according to the law, the antiterrorist operation was now being reformed. "On March 30, according to the statement of the President of Ukraine, the Chancellor of Germany, the President of France - and we have put the squeeze on Putin so that he makes the same statement, and he’s been refusing to do so this time - truce was established," the President told. According to the Head of State, he begins every working day with information about the situation on the frontline.

"Our troops clearly fulfill the orders of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief regarding the ceasefire," the President said. At the same time, he regretfully noted the non-compliance with the ceasefire regime by pro-Russian militants and said that today there were eleven shelling occasions, including with heavy weaponry. "This is unacceptable," the Head of State stressed.

The President also stressed the importance of creating all conditions for the UN peacekeeping mission to start its work and for the ceasefire to be achieved. "To adopt the decision of the UN Security Council (on the introduction of a peacekeeping mission - ed.). Today, Ukraine's firm position in the struggle for peace leads to the fact that all countries except Russia support the introduction of peacekeepers. Let's face it. You see that Russia is now in complete isolation. Nobody supports it, just because it aggressively attacked Ukraine and keeps killing Ukrainians," he said.

The Head of State informed that he would pay a visit to Germany on April 10, where he plans to discuss, among other things, the issue of the introduction of a peacekeeping mission.

He also stressed that the beginning of the work of peacekeepers will facilitate the withdrawal of military equipment, armaments, regular military units of the Russian Federation and pro-Russian militants from the occupied territories. The Head of State also stresses that the main priority of the Ukrainian authorities is the restoration of the destroyed infrastructure of these territories - construction of schools, kindergartens, hospitals, roads, bridges, restoration of lighting, etc. "Today, Donetsk region gets the first presidential priority," he said.

"Of course, on this day, we must thank our soldiers who defend the Ukrainian land from the Russian aggression. Despite the fact that we stand at the positions of peace, without them Ukraine would not have been preserved," Petro Poroshenko emphasized.
