The State and Cultural Figures Will Make Efforts to Promote Ukrainian Music Worldwide – Olena Kovalska

Ukrainian culture is one of the elements of national security. That is why the state, cultural figures, and performers will make efforts to promote Ukrainian music globally. This was stated by Deputy Head of the Office of the President Olena Kovalska during the national forum-dialogue "Ukrainian Music Industry: Listen, Protect What’s Yours."

The event brought together members of parliament, government officials, cultural figures, performers, producers, music industry experts, and intellectual property lawyers. Key topics included the challenges facing Ukraine’s music industry, current development trends, legislative changes in the field of intellectual property, and possible measures to block or restrict access to Russian-language music content.

“Without a doubt, Ukraine’s cultural policy must today serve as an effective weapon in the fight against the Russian aggressor. Artists who present Ukrainian musical art and the music industry play an important role as the voice of Ukraine, telling the world the truth about what is happening in Ukraine,” Olena Kovalska emphasized.

She also noted that Russia is attempting to expand its influence in the musical space, using popular streaming platforms to do so. For example, the top spot in Apple Music Ukraine’s paid streaming chart was recently taken by a Bashkir band that openly supports Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Olena Kovalska stressed the importance of producing high-quality, modern, and appealing Ukrainian music content across a variety of genres.

“To address these issues comprehensively, the state must support this effort at a strategic level. We need to develop appropriate legislation, strategies, and financing mechanisms,” said the Deputy Head of the Office of the President.

Member of Parliament Oleksandr Sanchenko noted that some of the key problems in the music industry include the lack of modern, well-equipped concert venues and a shortage of recording studios and professional management.

The forum was held on the occasion of World Intellectual Property Day with the support of the Office of the President of Ukraine, the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications, and the Ukrainian National Office of Intellectual Property and Innovation. The conclusions of the panel discussions will be taken into account in the work of parliament, government, and representatives of the music industry.
