Volodymyr Zelenskyy: G7 Countries Must Invest in Ukrainian Defense Technologies and Strengthen Sanctions Against Russia

The G7 countries must invest in the development of Ukrainian defense technologies and increase sanctions against Russia to force Vladimir Putin to end the war. This was stated by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his speech at the special G7 leaders’ meeting “A Strong and Sovereign Ukraine” in Canada.

The Head of State informed participants about Russia’s massive missile and drone strike targeting civilians in Ukraine. Russia launched 440 drones and 32 missiles of various types, including ballistic ones and those with cluster warheads. According to the President, rescue efforts are still ongoing. As of now, 131 people have been reported injured and 15 killed, including a U.S. citizen.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Russia is deepening its cooperation with Iran and North Korea, which poses a threat not only to Ukraine but to the entire world. A clear example is Russia’s upgrade of Iranian drones and the subsequent transfer of these enhanced models to North Korea. That is why Ukraine is actively working on the development and deployment of interceptor drones and requires additional funding to support their production.

“We will all have to keep working together – with the highest possible level of coordination. Not just political and diplomatic, but also technological and investment-based. I urge you to continue increasing investments in weapons production in Ukraine – this is the fastest way to achieve results,” the President noted.

He also urged G7 leaders to impose a strict price cap on Russian oil – no higher than USD 30 per barrel. According to the President, the EU’s 18th sanctions package must reinforce restrictions on Russia’s banking and energy sectors.

In addition, the Head of State stressed the importance of securing $40 billion in annual budgetary support for Ukraine from the G7 countries, including the United States.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy also believes it is important for all to continue jointly urging U.S. President Donald Trump to use the full extent of his real influence to pressure Russia to end the war.

“It was the U.S. and President Trump who proposed a ceasefire, the resumption of diplomacy, immediate meetings and negotiations. But Russia has blocked every effort. This war continues because of Russia. From the start, it has been an unprovoked and criminal war of aggression. We must not forget that. And we must keep up pressure – in all directions – to finally bring peace,” the President concluded.
