President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, together with his team, held a video call with the U.S. side regarding one of the three documents necessary to achieve peace – the one on security guarantees for our country.
The U.S. side was represented by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, members of the U.S. President’s team Steven Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Generals Jack Keane and Alexus Grynkewich, and Senior White House Advisor Josh Gruenbaum. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also took part in the call.
The President noted that Ukraine greatly values the active engagement of the U.S. side at all levels – both to end the war and to ensure Ukraine’s security and prevent a new Russian invasion. This reflects the seriousness of the United States’ intentions and its commitment to achieving outcomes.
“Security guarantees are among the most critical elements for all subsequent steps. We have already got the negative experience of the Budapest Memorandum. Everyone remembers this, as well as the occasions when Russia repeatedly violated all its other commitments,” the Head of State emphasized.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that the security guarantees document must contain concrete answers to what concerns Ukrainians the most: what actions partners will take if the Russian Federation decides to launch its aggression against Ukraine again.
The parties agreed that the Ukrainian and U.S. teams will work actively to ensure that, in the near future, there is a clear understanding of the security guarantees.
