President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko discussed with German Chancellor Angela Merkel the issue of continuing the Normandy format to stop Russia's aggression against Ukraine, release Ukrainian hostages and implement the Minsk agreements.
The Head of State informed that during a meeting with media representatives following the negotiations with Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel.
"I would like to thank Mrs. Chancellor. Today we discussed this issue at our meeting," Petro Poroshenko said.
"Immediately after the presidential elections, I will be ready, with the support of both Mrs. Chancellor and President Macron, to initiate a Summit in the Normandy format in order not to waste a single day and discuss in the Normandy format the release of hostages, the release of Ukrainian prisoners of war. And discuss the format of the mission of the peacekeepers, the Blue Helmets of the United Nations. And the implementation of the Minsk agreements, including the security and political format," the President of Ukraine said and thanked the Chancellor of Germany for supporting these proposals.
In turn, Angela Merkel stressed: "I think this format fully proved its value".
"As for the combination with the trilateral contact group, I believe we need to continue to work in this format. This is not a format that excludes the others," the German Chancellor said. She added that in the matters of the Normandy format, the EU had always been closely cooperating with the United States.
"This format has proved its value in these extremely difficult conditions. I think it needs to be extended," Angela Merkel emphasized.
