I hope that in the near future we will find opportunities to attract natural gas from the Caspian Sea to Ukraine - President on the TANAP gas pipeline launch

During his working visit to the Republic of Turkey, President Petro Poroshenko took part in the ceremony of launching the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP).

The Head of State thanked the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, for his invitation, as the launch of this TANAP gas pipeline is an historic event for Turkey, Azerbaijan, the European Union and Ukraine. He called this project a good example of fruitful regional cooperation aimed at diversifying sources of energy supply and reducing dependence on individual gas suppliers.

"The joint efforts of Turkey, Azerbaijan, and with the participation of other European countries, the construction of this main element of the Southern Gas Corridor has been completed. From now on, the whole region will have deeper security and wider energy prospects", the President said.

"As the past decade clearly shows, the Russian Federation periodically abused its energy resources. They have become an instrument of pressure on the energy-dependent countries to influence their domestic and foreign policies. Or punish them when these attempts were not resorted", said Petro Poroshenko.

"The project of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is a vivid example of such a pressure. Some believe that this is a commercial project, but in reality it is a purely geopolitical project. And it has nothing to do with energy supply and real diversification", the Head of State added.

According to him, TANAP is the energy security of Azerbaijan and Turkey.

"But it is also the energy security of Europe - the diversification of gas supplies to Europe, as well as the competitiveness of Europe. It is also the energy security of Ukraine, the diversification of its gas supplies and competitiveness", said the President, noting the role of Turkey and Azerbaijan.

The Head of State stressed that TANAP will be a significant contribution to the prosperity of the entire region, and this is not just a new project, but a new stage in the development of gas that will be supplied to the European system.

"Ukraine fully supports this project. And today we agreed that we would be happy to diversify our energy sources and receive gas from TANAP through Bulgaria and Romania", Petro Poroshenko emphasized. According to him, this is another proof that Ukraine supports economically viable European projects to diversify energy supplies.

"We are counting on the support of Turkey and Azerbaijan for additional supply of energy resources to Ukraine by alternative routes. I believe that in the near future we will find opportunities to attract natural gas from Azerbaijan, the Caspian Sea, not only to Ukraine but also to the entire region connected with the Ukrainian gas transportation system", said the President, wishing the project a success.
